A 2025 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) mouse study published in Nature found that, among diets individually enriched in 20 different amino acids, dietary cysteine produced the strongest rejuvenating effect on intestinal stem cells and early-stage intestinal cells that are damaged by radiation therapy, with the effects concentrated in the small intestine and associated with activation of immune cells that release signals to regenerate intestinal tissue.
