Gretchen Whitmer — via press secretary Stacey LaRouche — and Michigan lawmakers rejected President Trump’s Truth Social threat to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which he said the U.S. should “own, perhaps, at least one half” of and complained lacked “U.S. content, such as steel.” The Canada‑financed $5.7 billion span, jointly owned by Canada and Michigan and meant to ease congestion on one of North America’s busiest trade crossings, will open “one way or another,” officials said, warning that any attempt to block it would harm Michigan jobs, supply chains and the regional economy.

Axios reports that last month Trump officials offered to release the federal hold on $16 billion for the Gateway Tunnel Project only if Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer agreed to rename New York’s Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump, a demand that prompted fury from Democrats. The offer was reportedly made in follow‑up conversations with Schumer’s team rather than during their Oval Office meeting, and comes as the project faces an indefinite shutdown Friday without the frozen funding and amid parallel talks over DHS and ICE reforms.
