Ford Recalls 4.4 Million Vehicles Over Trailer‑Brake Software Defect
Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 4.4 million trucks, vans and SUVs from model years 2021 through 2026 because a software defect can cut off communication with attached trailers, disabling their tail lights, turn signals and electric brakes right after the tow vehicle is started. According to Ford and a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice, the failure triggers a "Trailer Brake Module Fault" warning and rapid‑flashing turn signal, and may also show a "Blind Spot Assist System fault" message, with the loss of trailer lighting and braking increasing crash risk by reducing control and visibility. The recall covers multiple Ford models, with F‑150 and F‑250 pickups accounting for more than 3.4 million of the affected vehicles, although Ford says it is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fires linked to the problem. The company began investigating complaints in October 2025 and plans to roll out a free software update in May 2026, either over the air or at Ford and Lincoln dealers. Owners who tow are being advised to heed dashboard warnings and arrange for the fix once it is available, as the defect can directly compromise highway safety for both drivers and other motorists.
