NTSB: Maine Jet Crash Exceeded FAA De‑Icing Holdover Time
A preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report finds that the Bombardier Challenger 600 business jet that crashed and burned at Bangor International Airport on Jan. 25, 2026, killing all six on board, waited roughly 17 minutes between the start of de‑icing and takeoff, longer than the approximately nine‑minute holdover time indicated by FAA guidance for the conditions. The report quotes the pilot and copilot as saying they viewed 14 to 18 minutes as 'standard' and would only return for more de‑icing if they exceeded 30 minutes, exposing a potential gap between federal standards and cockpit practice. Security cameras captured the jet’s takeoff roll, inversion and impact on the runway, followed by multiple explosions, in light snow and near‑zero temperatures as a major storm approached; another aircraft had just aborted its own takeoff and requested another de‑icing application due to poor visibility. The victims included Houston attorney and travel‑company owner Tara Arnold, three colleagues from her luxury travel business, and two Texas‑based pilots, who had stopped in Bangor to refuel en route from Houston to France. While the NTSB has not yet determined a probable cause and the final report may be more than a year away, this early finding will feed scrutiny of winter‑operations procedures, pilot training, and whether federal de‑icing rules are being followed or enforced in business aviation.
