Prosecutors in DuPage County, Illinois say 19-year-old Nedas Revuckas stabbed 30-year-old Eliza Morales—five months pregnant—more than 70 times, stabbed the family dog between the eyes, and set her Downers Grove apartment on fire on Jan. 26 after a dispute over a used 1994 Ford Ranger purchased via Facebook Marketplace. Revuckas, who allegedly went to the couple’s building under the pretense of returning license plates and getting a bill of sale, was captured on surveillance video entering with a screwdriver and then appearing to struggle inside the unit before the killing and fire. Police body-camera and in-car video released in the case show him appearing calm and relaxed when officers later confronted him at his home, initially denying he went past the dining room table and claiming the dog "was fine," then trying to nap in the back of a police cruiser after his arrest before, according to prosecutors, ultimately confessing. He has now pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, intentional homicide of an unborn child, animal cruelty, armed robbery and arson. The case highlights both the risks around in‑person marketplace transactions and the public-safety concerns that arise when a suspect in an apparently premeditated, extremely violent crime shows little visible remorse or distress in initial police encounters.
