Former New Haven Police Chief Charged With Stealing $85,500 in Department Funds
Connecticut authorities have arrested former New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson on two counts of larceny for allegedly stealing about $85,500 from two department-controlled accounts between January 2024 and early January 2026. State prosecutors say an investigation by the Connecticut State Police found roughly $81,500 missing or misappropriated from the department’s Narcotic Enforcement Fund—money meant to pay confidential informants in drug cases—and another $4,000 taken from the New Haven Police Activity League Fund, with checks from both funds deposited into Jacobson’s personal bank account. Mayor Justin Elicker has previously said Jacobson admitted taking informant-compensation money for personal use after three deputy chiefs confronted him over irregularities, and called the conduct a “betrayal of public trust.” Jacobson, who abruptly retired in January after three years as chief and 15 years on the force, turned himself in on Feb. 20 and was released on $150,000 bond as his attorney declined public comment. Investigators say no other department personnel are implicated, but state officials acknowledge that an alleged embezzlement by a sitting chief risks further eroding public confidence in policing in a city already wrestling with crime and accountability concerns.
