Arcadia, Calif., Ex-Mayor Formally Pleads Guilty As Illegal Agent For China

Eileen Wang pleaded guilty on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in federal court in Los Angeles to acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government, a charge that carries up to 10 years in prison.[1]

She resigned as Arcadia mayor on Monday, May 11, 2026, the same day prosecutors unsealed a plea agreement and said she had appeared in federal court in downtown Los Angeles.[2] The plea agreement says Wang ran a site called U.S. News Center from late 2020 through at least the end of 2022 to push pro-China content under direction of Chinese officials.[2] Arcadia city manager Dominic Lazzaretto said no city money or staff were involved and that the conduct stopped after Wang was sworn in as mayor in December 2022.[3] Wang's lawyers said she recognizes the seriousness of the charge and accepts responsibility for past personal mistakes.[2] They also said she apologized and still cares for the Arcadia community.[2]

The filing links Wang's work to Southern California resident Yaoning "Mike" Sun, her then-fiancé and campaign treasurer, who was sentenced in February 2026 to four years in prison for his role.[2] Prosecutors included an example in which an encrypted message instructed Wang to publish an essay denying genocide and forced labor in Xinjiang and attacking critics as defamers of China.[2] Wang was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022, and the mayor is chosen on a rotating basis from the five-member council.[2]

Early local coverage highlighted Wang's resignation and her lawyers' apology, framing the case largely as personal misconduct.[3] Later reporting cast the case as part of broader Chinese influence efforts, noting President Trump's state visit to Beijing and Arcadia's large Asian and foreign-born populations.[4] First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said the case showed individuals covertly doing the bidding of foreign governments.[2] Broadcast coverage also used "covert" to describe Wang's role as the Justice Department's national-security framing circulated.[5]
