U.S. executions nearly double in 2025, led by Florida
The Death Penalty Information Center’s year-end report says the U.S. carried out 46 executions in 2025 so far, with two more scheduled this week in Georgia and Florida that would bring the total to 48—the highest in over 15 years. Florida accounts for 19 executions (about 40%), a state record, as Gov. Ron DeSantis cites clearing pandemic backlogs; Alabama, South Carolina and Texas each conducted five. DPIC also reports at least 40 executed prisoners this year had serious mental illness, brain damage, severe trauma, or intellectual-disability-range IQ, highlighting ongoing concerns about how capital punishment is applied.
