NORC survey finds artists face economic strain

NORC at the University of Chicago released a nationwide survey of more than 2,600 U.S. artists on Nov. 19, 2025, detailing financial insecurity and work conditions across disciplines. Funded by the Mellon Foundation, the study reports 57% worry about affording basics, 37% received public-assistance income, 34% are self‑employed, 11% juggle three or more jobs, and 28% provide unpaid caregiving; NORC also published its survey instrument to enable replication.
