Mexico Names 17 New Suspects, Finds Remains In 2014 Ayotzinapa Case

On Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, Mexico's special prosecutor Mauricio Pázaran said investigators have identified 17 new suspects in the 2014 disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students and found human remains linked to the probe.[1]

Investigators said they seized an illegally obtained weapon and recovered a bone, unregistered bone fragments and teeth at a funeral home tied to the inquiry.[1] Pázaran said a public employee and a municipal police officer used the cellphones of two missing students days after they vanished.[1] He said a Guerreros Unidos cartel member arrested in April — who was a minor in 2014 — is now a cooperating witness who "participated directly" in the events.[1] Authorities report 168 people are being prosecuted in the case and 130 remain in pretrial detention.[1]

On the night of September 26, 2014, phone-call records show communications among officials, police, organized-crime figures and private citizens, and a fresh analysis of those calls helped shape the new leads.[1]

Officials said the new findings expand the probe and could bring new clarity about what happened to the students.[1]
