ICE Lodges Detainer for Honduran National Accused in Missouri Teen Ambush Killing
The Department of Homeland Security says Immigration and Customs Enforcement has filed an immigration detainer against Honduran national Yefry Archaga-Elvir, who is accused of ambushing and fatally shooting 15-year-old Miles Young in Missouri in March 2026 after luring him to a meeting he thought was with a girl. According to DHS and a probable cause affidavit it cites, Archaga-Elvir and accomplices allegedly used two vehicles to block Young’s escape, chased him on foot and shot him in the chest as witnesses heard the boy plead, "I just don’t want to die," and the suspect later made a "braggadocios" phone call about the killing. DHS says Archaga-Elvir was first arrested in Texas in 2015 as an accompanied minor and released by the Obama administration, a point Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis uses to blame prior federal decisions as ICE now asks Missouri authorities not to release him from jail. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is leveraging the case to argue that the suspect “never should have been in Missouri in the first place” and to call for aggressive prosecution and deportation of “criminal illegal aliens,” while supporters of the victim have launched a fundraising page describing Young as a compassionate, loving teen. The case is already feeding national political debate and social media anger over border enforcement failures, juvenile releases at the border and cooperation between states and ICE, with Missouri law cited as promoting collaboration rather than sanctuary-style limits.
