The New START treaty has fully expired, ending nearly six decades of continuous U.S.–Russia nuclear limits and inspections that had already been weakened by suspended COVID-era inspections and mutual accusations of noncompliance and convertible systems. Hours after the expiration Washington and Moscow agreed to resume high‑level military contacts, even as President Trump rejected a temporary extension and pushed for a “new, modernized” multilateral deal that would include China (while Russia says it may continue to mirror U.S. limits if reciprocated but insists other Western nuclear powers also be addressed).
