Study: Lung screening rules miss most patients
A Northwestern Medicine study published in JAMA Network Open of ~1,000 lung cancer cases (2018–2023) found only about 35% would have qualified for screening under current USPSTF criteria, with women, Asian patients and never-smokers disproportionately missed. Researchers modeled a universal, age‑based CT approach (ages 40–85) that would detect ~94% of cancers and estimate preventing ~26,000 U.S. deaths per year at ~$101,000 per life saved, far below modeled costs for breast or colorectal programs.
