The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has issued a late‑November security alert to U.S. 'snowbird' tourists, warning that violent crime can occur anywhere in Mexico, including popular winter destinations such as San Carlos, Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Los Cabos and Mazatlán, especially after dark. The alert cautions drivers about both legal and illegal checkpoints that may be used by criminals for extortion, urges travelers to cooperate and avoid appearing aggressive to reduce the risk of violence, and reminds Americans not to carry packages across the border or use drugs, which are illegal and can lead to long prison sentences.
