St. Cloud police say 22-year-old Hallie Marie Tobler, daughter of Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson, was found with multiple stab wounds at a residence in the 3100 block of 40 Ave. S. around 8:20 p.m. Saturday and later pronounced dead. Her 23-year-old husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, was discovered at the scene with what investigators believe were self-inflicted stab wounds and is in stable condition at St. Cloud Hospital; he is now in police custody and will be booked into the Stearns County Jail on homicide-related charges. The Minnesota Republican Party issued a statement calling the killing a murder, expressing that it was "heartbroken" for Johnson’s family, and confirmed that Johnson has suspended his gubernatorial campaign "out of respect for his family and the enormity of this loss." Johnson’s campaign website appeared to have been taken down by Tuesday morning. The case is being treated as an apparent botched murder–suicide, underscoring ongoing concerns about intimate-partner violence even as it abruptly reshapes a statewide GOP primary field.
