U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent used a Washington Post op-ed on Sunday to urge Senate Republicans to abolish the legislative filibuster, calling it a “procedural fossil” that enables paralysis and citing the recent record shutdown’s economic harm. He argued Democrats would end the filibuster when in power and said eliminating it would restore Senate function; Senate Majority Leader John Thune responded there aren’t enough GOP votes and warned Republicans would “own” future Democratic actions if they do it first.
