India Seizes Three U.S.-Sanctioned 'Dark Fleet' Oil Tankers Off Mumbai
India’s Coast Guard intercepted three U.S.-sanctioned oil tankers about 100 nautical miles northwest of Mumbai on Feb. 6 and says they were engaged in illicit ship‑to‑ship transfers as part of an 'international oil-smuggling racket.' The vessels, described by analysts as part of the so‑called 'dark fleet' that moves sanctioned crude for Iran, Russia and others, are now anchored off Mumbai under investigation, a Coast Guard spokesman confirmed Tuesday. This is being read as New Delhi’s first direct enforcement step in support of Washington’s campaign to choke off sanctions‑evading oil shipments, and it comes as U.S.–India trade and strategic ties are warming despite India’s past reluctance to fully align with U.S. sanctions. For U.S. policymakers and energy markets, the move could marginally tighten flows of sanctioned crude and signals that at least some big non‑Western buyers are now willing to help police shadow‑fleet activity in their waters.
