After his family announced he died peacefully at 84, the flag‑draped casket of Rev. Jesse Jackson arrived at the South Carolina Statehouse on a horse‑drawn caisson Monday, where a white‑gloved Highway Patrol honor guard carried it into the Capitol and placed it under the rotunda for a public viewing and ceremony led by State Rep. Jermaine Johnson. The service — which included a rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and full honors from his home state — makes Jackson only the second Black man to lie in state at the South Carolina Capitol, and is part of cross‑country memorials that began with repose at Rainbow PUSH in Chicago and will include a large Chicago celebration and other planned services.
