President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected a proposal from former U.S. President Donald Trump to permit U.S. military strikes against drug cartels. Diplomatic tensions were heightened after Pentagon contractors placed signs marking a "National Defense Area III" at the mouth of the Rio Grande—six of which Mexico’s navy removed—prompting the Pentagon to say shifting water depth and topography altered the perceived boundary and that contractors will coordinate with appropriate agencies and the International Boundary and Water Commission to avoid further confusion.
