The United States has reached an agreement with the Commonwealth of Dominica that could allow some asylum seekers who arrive at the U.S. border to be transferred to the small Caribbean nation, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit confirmed, following recent U.S. visa restrictions on Dominican nationals announced Dec. 16 and effective Jan. 1, 2026. Skerrit said the deal is a primary area of collaboration with Washington, emphasized that Dominica is working with U.S. officials to avoid receiving violent individuals and continues pressing to reverse the new travel limits, while opposition leaders at home demand clarity on how many people may be sent, where they will be housed and how they will be supported.
