Around 1 a.m. Sunday, Oslo police reported a "loud bang" outside the U.S. Embassy and later said an incendiary device placed in a backpack was detonated outside the Consular Affairs entrance, producing thick smoke and minor damage but causing no injuries. Authorities, including Norway’s Police Security Service, deployed additional personnel and the justice minister condemned the incident as unacceptable; investigators say the embassy appears to have been the target, are working multiple hypotheses, have not established a motive or found evidence of further devices, and see no ongoing danger to the public.
