German authorities say they have arrested an 81‑year‑old man in a retirement home on suspicion of sexually assaulting and murdering 24‑year‑old American student Amy Lopez, whose body was found near Koblenz’s Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in 1994. Prosecutors say Lopez, a tourist from Texas, was strangled, bludgeoned with a stone and stabbed multiple times, and that advances in DNA technology allowed investigators to re‑examine her clothing and analyze about 1,600 samples. A male DNA trace discovered in 2024 led police to renew a reward and feature the case on a national true‑crime program, generating tips; they then matched a fresh saliva sample from the suspect to DNA inside Lopez’s jeans. Officials say the man’s DNA had once been in the system because of a 1999 conviction for attempting to rape a 16‑year‑old girl, but was later deleted, underscoring both the power and limits of past data retention. The suspect is now in pretrial detention in Rhineland‑Palatinate on suspicion of premeditated murder, and German investigators have informed Lopez’s father that they believe they may finally be able to resolve the 32‑year‑old case.
