Type 2 Diabetes Treatment

A new observational study led by University of Hong Kong researchers, using the UK IQVIA Medical Research Data for adults aged 25 to 84 with type 2 diabetes and no prior serious heart or liver disease, finds that starting statin therapy reduced all‑cause mortality and major cardiovascular events over up to 10 years compared with similar patients who did not take statins. Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the analysis reports benefits across all groups, including patients categorized as low risk by standard 10‑year cardiovascular prediction tools, with only a small increase in myopathy in one risk group and no apparent rise in liver complications, suggesting clinicians should consider statins for most adults with type 2 diabetes.
