The Justice Department has issued subpoenas and opened a criminal investigation into whether Fed Chair Jerome Powell was truthful about the Federal Reserve’s headquarters renovation — which grew from about $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion — prompting Powell to release an unusually combative video calling the probe unprecedented and tying it to White House pressure for lower interest rates. In a CBS interview, President Trump said many conservatives "love" the DOJ action, called Powell "lousy" and declined to disavow appearances of retaliation ("I can't help what it looks like"), even as some GOP lawmakers have expressed concern and urged the probe be resolved quickly.
