The U.S. International Trade Commission has found that imports of thermoformed molded fiber food containers from China and Vietnam are materially injuring U.S. producers, clearing the way for the Commerce Department to impose massive antidumping and countervailing duties—exceeding 540% for some Chinese producers and 260% for Vietnamese suppliers. The decision, expected to result in at least five years of trade penalties plus retroactive duties on some Vietnamese shipments, targets disposable bowls, plates, cups and takeout containers made from molded fiber that have been imported at what U.S. authorities deem unfairly low prices.
