The House release of seven years of Summers–Epstein emails — with messages as late as July 5, 2019 and exchanges in which Epstein called himself Summers’s “wing man” and advised on a relationship with a mentee — prompted Summers to say he is “deeply ashamed” and to step back from public commitments. He has resigned from the OpenAI board, will take immediate leave from teaching at Harvard (not finishing the semester and not scheduled to teach next term, with co‑teachers completing remaining sessions), and is stepping aside as director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Mossavar‑Rahmani Center while the university reopens a review and other organizations severed or ended affiliations.
