The Justice Department filed a motion in D.C. federal court seeking to vacate Steve Bannon’s contempt-of-Congress conviction and dismiss the Jan. 6–related case — which would formally erase a conviction he already served four months for — saying dismissal is “in the interests of justice” but offering no detailed legal rationale. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche called the Jan. 6 committee’s subpoena “improper” and framed the move as part of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s effort to “undo the prior administration’s weaponization of the justice system,” while Solicitor General John Sauer has asked the Supreme Court to consider Bannon’s appeal; DOJ has not sought a similar dismissal in the parallel contempt case against Peter Navarro, who says he will keep litigating.
