Nearly 20,000 immigrant commercial truck drivers in California have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state Department of Motor Vehicles, alleging it unlawfully plans to cancel their non-domiciled commercial drivers’ licenses starting Jan. 5, 2026, because of DMV errors in matching license expiration dates to federal work-authorization documents. The suit, brought by the Asian Law Caucus, the Sikh Coalition and law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges on behalf of the Jakara Movement and five drivers, claims the state has failed to honor public assurances that it would reissue corrected licenses and warns that the cancellations would trigger mass work stoppages affecting food, school and goods transportation.
