The U.S. State Department announced on Jan. 7, 2026 that it has suspended all ongoing American assistance programs benefiting Somalia’s federal government after alleging Somali officials destroyed a U.S.-funded World Food Program warehouse and seized 76 metric tons of food aid intended for impoverished civilians. The Trump administration said aid will not resume until Mogadishu accepts accountability and takes remedial steps, a move that comes as Washington has tightened restrictions on Somali migrants in the U.S. and sharply reduced overall foreign aid outlays to the country. Somalia, in the Horn of Africa, remains one of the world’s poorest and most disaster‑stricken nations, heightening concerns about humanitarian fallout.
