AAA finds poor compliance with roadside move-over laws
AAA analysis of surveillance video at roadside incidents finds that about 36% of U.S. drivers fail to slow down or move over when passing stopped vehicles with flashing lights, even though all 50 states have 'Slow Down, Move Over' laws; the Emergency Responders Safety Institute reports 46 emergency responders were struck and killed in 2024 and at least 31 more so far in 2025. Officials including Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and AAA’s Aixa Diaz warn that distracted driving, weak enforcement and low perceived ticket risk are putting police, firefighters, tow operators and other roadside workers in danger, with penalties ranging from $30 in Florida to $2,500 in Virginia.
