SafeWise estimates roughly 250,000 packages are stolen each day across the U.S., totaling nearly $15 billion in losses over the past year, as holiday deliveries surge. In response, Rep. Josh Gottheimer introduced the Porch Pirates Act earlier this month to make theft of any delivered package a federal crime, with penalties up to $250,000 and 10 years in prison, closing a gap that currently protects only USPS-handled mail.
