Catholic group sues DHS over ICE access in Chicago

The Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership and several Catholic clergy filed a federal lawsuit on Nov. 19, 2025 in the Northern District of Illinois alleging DHS/ICE unlawfully barred clergy from ministering to detainees at the Broadview, Ill., immigration facility. The suit claims September access restrictions—fencing off the steps and denying entry—violate the First Amendment, RFRA and RLUIPA, and follows a recent court order requiring improved conditions and attorney access at the site.
