On Jan. 16, Juan Alvarado Aguilar, an undocumented driver, allegedly crossed the center line in a Chevrolet Silverado and struck a vehicle, killing 20-year-old college soccer player Fletcher Harris and his 19-year-old girlfriend Skylar Provenza; troopers at the scene reported a strong odor of alcohol, that Aguilar appeared unsteady, and a blood draw was taken at a hospital. Court records show Aguilar faced a Nov. 5, 2020 DWI charge that was dismissed "with leave" and had two prior failures to appear, prosecutors asked to raise bond to $2 million and a judge set it above $5 million, and Provenza’s mother, Shannon Swiderski Hamrick, blamed both DUI and Aguilar’s immigration status while criticizing public figures she says condone such behavior.
