A U.S. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted all nine crew members from the 134‑foot commercial crab boat Arctic Sea on Monday after it lost steering, took on water, and grounded below steep cliffs on Saint George Island in Alaska’s Bering Sea amid near‑gale‑force winds and 10‑foot seas. The crew, fishing for tanner crab and owned by the Coastal Villages Region Fund, donned survival suits and activated an emergency beacon before being lifted from the deck in about 25 minutes with no reported injuries, and a private firm has been contracted to manage salvage operations while the Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley and aircraft supported the response.
