Hundreds of protesters in Portland, Oregon marched Sunday from City Hall to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention and field office in the South Waterfront, briefly shutting down downtown streets as they demanded ICE leave the city and accountability for the January killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal agents in Minneapolis. Video from Fox 12 Oregon and wire services shows Federal Protective Service officers emerging from the facility and firing tear gas, pepper balls and flashbang grenades into the crowd at the building’s entrance, with an eyewitness describing the scene as a 'war zone' and saying she was hit and had to wash chemicals from her face. The protest was organized by immigrant‑rights group Portland Contra las Deportaciones, which held a rally at City Hall before the march and said demonstrators are 'outraged' that political leaders have not done more to rein in ICE. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek sharply criticized the federal response on X, saying the use of chemical agents against families, children and peaceful demonstrators is a 'horrific abuse of authority' that violates constitutional rights and declaring ICE has 'no place in Oregon.' The facility, an ICE processing and interview center guarded by the Federal Protective Service, has become a flashpoint as Portland joins other U.S. cities seeing renewed street‑level resistance to Trump‑era interior immigration crackdowns.
