Maryland Gov. In a Fox News Digital interview, Moore reiterated that his grandfather, James Joshua Thomas, was forced out of South Carolina as a toddler because of Klan activity, later returned to the U.S. and became the first Black minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, and said attacks on that account are "deeply hurtful and deeply offensive." The Free Beacon’s reporting points to Episcopal records and local accounts describing Thomas’s move to Jamaica as an appointment to replace a deceased pastor, and notes contemporaneous praise from White residents for his church’s medical work rather than evidence of racial terror. Moore responded that criticism should be directed at the Klan, not his family, and portrayed the story as central to his understanding of American racism and patriotism.
