House Republicans have alleged the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department downgraded crime classifications to manipulate statistics, and a months‑long federal probe led by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro reviewed nearly 6,000 reports and interviewed more than 50 witnesses, finding widespread misclassification that made crime appear "artificially lower." Pirro said the conduct did not rise to criminal charges but urged MPD to address the issues internally; the probe began last August amid a federal crime crackdown in D.C. ordered by President Trump.
