Joseph Hartzler, the federal prosecutor who led the successful case against Timothy McVeigh for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, died Dec. 18, 2025, at his home in Chicago at age 75 from pneumonia, his wife said. Hartzler, a longtime assistant U.S. attorney in Illinois, was chosen by Attorney General Janet Reno to head the bombing prosecution after earlier high‑profile cases, and was described by Merrick Garland as an experienced trial lawyer who worked effectively with FBI investigators.
