While serving an eviction notice Friday, Broward County Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow — a 25-year veteran who was posthumously promoted to sergeant — was fatally shot by 37-year-old Michael Halberstam, who also wounded a locksmith and another deputy; Halberstam died Saturday from gunshot wounds sustained during the confrontation, the locksmith remains in critical condition after surgery, and a second deputy is recovering from a shoulder injury. Sheriff Eric Flowers said deputies had answered seven calls to the residence in the past month, mostly from the suspect’s mother, and officials noted nothing in Halberstam’s record would have precluded lawful firearm possession, though he had prior charges in 2006 and 2015.
