Pope Leo XIV has publicly backed the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ special message condemning the Trump administration’s mass deportation raids as instilling widespread fear and urging that migrants be treated with inherent human dignity. At the same time he has appointed Bishop Ronald Hicks, a 58‑year‑old Joliet prelate with missionary experience in El Salvador and a pastoral, Rome‑aligned profile, as archbishop of New York — Hicks has likewise endorsed the bishops’ statement and is viewed as a break from Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s more political posture.
