A Monmouth County jury on Friday convicted New Jersey tech executive Paul Caneiro, 59, of murdering his younger brother, Keith Caneiro, Keith’s wife Jennifer, and their two young children in 2018 before setting the family’s Colts Neck mansion on fire. Jurors found him guilty on four counts of murder, two counts of aggravated arson and two weapons charges after roughly five hours of deliberation, accepting prosecutors’ theory that he killed over a soured business relationship at their Asbury Park IT firm, Square One. Investigators said Keith had discovered Paul was stealing from their businesses and from him personally, and that Paul then tried to make the killings look like a broader attack by also torching his own Ocean Township home with his wife and daughters inside, who escaped uninjured. Defense attorneys argued police fixated on Caneiro and failed to fully investigate other possible suspects, including a third brother and two people reportedly seen at the victims’ home before first responders arrived. Caneiro faces a potential life sentence when he is scheduled to be sentenced on May 12, closing a closely watched New Jersey case that drew national attention for its brutality and the alleged family and financial motives behind it.
