Aldrich Ames, a former CIA officer who admitted spying for the Soviet KGB from 1985 until his 1994 arrest and receiving about $2.5 million, died Monday at age 84 in a Maryland federal prison, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed. Ames’s disclosures — including the identities of at least 10 Russian and one Eastern European agents and details on spy‑satellite operations, eavesdropping and CIA procedures — are blamed for compromising more than 100 cases and the deaths of Western sources; he pleaded guilty to espionage and tax‑evasion and was serving life without parole, while his wife Rosario pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to 63 months.
