The U.S. Army is preparing to fold high‑altitude balloons into major exercises in Nevada and across Europe in April and to test swarms of such balloons over the Pacific later this year, reflecting a quiet but significant shift in battlefield technology. The Wall Street Journal reports that militaries from Russia to U.S. allies are turning back to balloons—first used in the French Revolution—now upgraded with modern sensors, AI‑driven autonomy and advanced materials. These platforms can loiter at high altitude to spy, relay communications and carry payloads, including one‑way attack drones, over thousands of miles, while presenting a small radar signature and flying above much of today’s electronic‑warfare threat.
