John Pica, president of Italian American Organizations United, said his group has signed a loan agreement with the federal government after a White House intermediary contacted him around Columbus Day seeking a Columbus statue, and he expects installation could come within about two weeks. Nino Mangione confirmed the plan and said sculptor Will Hemsley rebuilt the statue using pieces of the original, which dates to Ronald Reagan’s presidency; the White House declined to discuss logistics but spokesman David Ingle said, "In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero."
