Authorities evacuated part of The Villages retirement community in Sumter County, Florida, on Tuesday after deputies responding to a call around 11:07 a.m. found what appeared to be military explosives inside a home in the Village of Rio Ranchero near Spanish Springs. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office brought in Lake County’s bomb squad, which confirmed the items were stolen U.S. military ordnance and removed the hazardous material from the scene. Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” and no injuries were reported. With the immediate danger cleared, the FBI has taken over the case to investigate how the explosives were obtained and whether others may be missing, an issue with clear national‑security implications given past concerns about stolen military munitions entering civilian circulation. The Jacksonville FBI field office has not yet released details on suspects, potential charges, or the type and quantity of explosives recovered.
