Washington Post Staff Shrinks by About Half as Newsroom Cut to 400 Journalists After Layoffs and Lewis Resignation
The Washington Post has sharply reduced its workforce after a round of mass layoffs and the resignation of publisher Will Lewis: company-wide staff fell from about 2,500 in October 2023 to roughly 1,300 now, and the newsroom is down to about 400 journalists, with entire sports and photo teams and large parts of metro, books and foreign coverage eliminated. Lewis stepped down days after cuts that hit roughly a third of the staff amid internal and public backlash over leadership absences and editorial shifts under owner Jeff Bezos, and CFO Jeff D’Onofrio has been named acting CEO and publisher as the paper faces criticism, subscriber losses and ethics questions.
