Fire Damages Portland Old Port Waterfront, Sinks Boat
A fire that began shortly after 5 p.m. damaged Portland’s historic Old Port waterfront, sank at least one boat and engulfed part of a New England wharf before firefighters brought it under control by about 7:22 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief Jon Hendricks said the blaze had a "pretty good head start" when crews arrived but an aggressive attack kept it from spreading further; two firefighters suffered minor injuries but were not transported to hospital. The Porthole Restaurant on Custom House Wharf survived and remains open, and Gov. Janet Mills said she was monitoring the situation and urged people to avoid the area.
