James Solomon was elected mayor of Jersey City after defeating former Gov. Jim McGreevey in a runoff; McGreevey publicly conceded and congratulated Solomon. Solomon pledged an affordability agenda β βan affordable Jersey City starts nowβ β as he succeeds Steven Fulop, who did not seek a fourth term after an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid, in a city of about 303,000 with a roughly $700 million municipal budget; the race followed a Nov. 4 first round with seven candidates and was officially nonpartisan though both finalists are Democrats.
