Virginia Legislature Passes Bill Requiring Jan. 6 Be Taught as Violent Attack and Barring 2020 ‘Extensive Fraud’ Claims in Public Schools
Virginia’s legislature passed a bill requiring public schools that teach Jan. 6 to present it as a violent insurrection and banning instruction that the 2020 election involved “extensive fraud.” Supporters, including Del. Dan Helmer and former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, say the first-of-its-kind measure is meant to combat falsehoods (Helmer cited a White House web page about Jan. 6 as part of the motivation and said the bill doesn’t force schools to teach the event but requires accuracy), and lawmakers in other states such as New York are considering similar proposals.
