Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has issued a state proclamation designating the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations, barring them and their affiliates from purchasing or acquiring land in Texas and authorizing state agencies to take heightened enforcement actions. Two Texas CAIR chapters have filed a federal lawsuit against Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton arguing the move is unconstitutional, while Abbott has urged the U.S. Treasury to strip CAIR’s tax-exempt status and allied officials — including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and President Trump — have launched parallel actions targeting the same groups.
